Within the Six Nations Championship there is a smaller competition between the home nations, England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. For one of these teams to win they must win their games played against their opposing three teams.

So you can win the six nations without winning the Triple Crown. In 2011 England won the Six Nations Championship but there last game Ireland convincingly beat them and denied them the Triple Crown.

The four teams that participate in it are called the home nations or the founding four nations. France and Italy were the last to join so are not eligible for this trophy. They can compete for the Six Nations Championship and the Grand slam.

The actually trophy did not exist till 2006 and was often called the invisible cup.
