Watching TV while others are trying to study or listen to music is not exactly easy. One way is to hook up your television set headphones then you can listen in peace but trailing wires can be a problem and inconvenient. Now there is another way using stereo wireless headphones.

Early models were not that great, had lousy sound and ate batteries but now they are pretty much state of the art. Major manufacturers like Sennheiser Bose and JVC have pushed the frontiers and now wireless headphones are just about as good as the corded variety. Nevertheless as usual you get what you pay for and with prices from a few dollars to hundreds where do you begin?

Best thing you can do is write down exactly what you need from a headset. If you want to listen to TV while in the same room either IR (Infrared) or RF (radio Frequency) will do fine. However if you move away from the TV to another room IR wireless headphones will stop transmitting. This is because the signal is carried on lightwaves and they need line of sight to operate. In that case you need RF wireless headphones, these will give freedom to move around without loosing the radio signal. many of the high price units have noise cancellation which is a clever electronic way of reducing extraneous and unwanted noise from your surroundings. If you think you can manage without this feature then do so, you will save some cash. Surround sound is also available in some wireless headphones but again you will pay for this feature - if you don’t need it then find a cheaper headphone set.

Watch out for transmitting range too. Apart from television stereo wireless headphones are useful to hook up to your Hi Fi system, MP3 or IPod and in that case you will want to be free to move any where inside and outside your home so get a headphone set that has a good range. There are dozens of makes on the market and you may have to spend some time analyzing what you want to ensure you only pay for what you need.
